Brodner's Cartoon du Jour: Brother Can You Spare $700 Billion?

September 24, 2008

Brother Can You Spare $700 Billion?

So how to think about this bailout plan? It is a burnt offering to Wall Street along with a prayer that it will not decide to seize up. It can also be seen as miles of ticker tape as Paulson rides down the Canyon of Heroes in the big Farewell-to-the-Reagan-Era-And-Go-Get-Lost-And-By The-Way-We'll-Hang-Onto-That-Golden-Parachute-and-the-US-Constitution-Too-Thank-you Parade.

I can see both sides of this McCain-Obama economy thing. On one hand McCain is concerned with the economy and wants to fix it now, point fingers later. On the other hand, how much can a junior senator accomplish by voting present?

I herewith draw the reader's attention to a column written by Ann Coulter, wherein she blames low income minorities for the present financial crisis.
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=76160
Therein, she flirts as close as ever to becoming a Nazi mouthpiece. Because that's what Nazis do. They blame (generally helpless) minorities for each and every crisis and even for crisis's which only exist in their heads.
The financial crisis the USA is now in the midst of is the result of two sins: Irresponsible governmental spending (and its evil cousin deficit borrowing) and federal regulators allowing banks to issue mortgages--which technically violated the underwriters lending guidelines--through creative use of short-term promotional (temporary) interest rates. Everyone knew at the time what was coming and no one cared. Now, years later it is a surprise?
Coulter is the most annoying excuse for a commentator I know. Bush and co. created this mess. He has connived his way through his entire career on other people's assets.
He managed to avoid the Vietnam draft board and even skipped out on his national Guard pilot's lessons.
Somehow he managed to be accepted by Yale, where he had his classmates doing his homework and could still only manage a "C".
He spent the next couple of decades in a alcohol daze and when he decided to go to work, his family set him up with an oil business which failed.
They then set him up with a 10% stake in the Texas Rangers which cost $-2.5-million. He cashed out a few years later for $25-million. The difference was the result of Texas politics which built a new stadium for the ball-club at taxpayers expense. Then he decided to run for Governor.
While he was a popular Governor, after all, that is still Texas we're discussing. His accomplishments included increases in the death-row population, cuts in social programs and large increases in toxic pollution.
Thereafter, the same Court who his Father appointed returned the favor and appointed him US President--where he promptly turned a healthy US economy into a barrel of red ink and doubled the national debt in 7 years. Now, as almost a last-minute binge, another trillion in debt is being heaped on the pile of payables that our children will inherit. And yest we hear some people blaming the poor. What effrontery.
