Brodner's Person of the Day: Gerbil Fermishbaugh

March 13, 2008

Gerbil Fermishbaugh. Geraldine Ferraro and Rush Limbaugh had an interesting meeting of the minds this week. She with her Limbaughlike racist rant and he with his ringing Hillary "endorsement" (to "bloody-up Obama"). Everybody loves the Clintons!!!

I think it's just unfair how everyone is picking on Monica Lewinsky's ex-boyfriend's wife.

Ferraro's comments, while wrong-headed were not (IMHO) "Racist". Someone who generalizes using sex-based or ethnic points-of-reference to make a claim (that may in fact be erronious) is not necessarally a "racist" of "Sexist". Under certain situations, their information may even be correct. For example, if I said that most gay men are known as good cooks, would anyone seriously deny this? If I said that many (urban) Italians like to play the $1.00 lottery, its an ethnic observation--which they themselves would likely not deny and in fact would probably confirm. The point is that neither thing is any cause for shame. Its just a talking point. If God wanted us to be all identical, He would have made us look like Brad Pitt (both men and women). Ferraro's biggest mistake was that her statement was backwards. By far, more people have refrained from voting for Obama because of his skin then voted for him. If her statement was "Racist" then certainly, so is mine. But neither are. Her comparison between her 1984 VP run and his was inane. She was selected and promoted by a small group of inner-circle "D" strategists, on the quite mistaken belief that they could energize the woman voters. Obama was voted into first place by millions of rank-and-file Democrats. Plus, Obama has more individual donors then Billary and McCain combined. If anything, her comment was especially backwards because it was Hillary (far more then Obama) who emulated Geraldine's 1984 strategy. Hillary is also well on her way to emulating Geraldine's 1984 defeat--if not in the primaries then in the G.E. (if Hillary is anywhere near the ticket).

Ethnic generalizations might be true in a lot of cases. But in a campaign, or in public discourse they are not a good choice because they create distractions and play with people's heads. Distraction has a vast constituency, we see. The groups who want to discuss how we deal with huge life-altering trends coming up is way smaller. Good luck to us. Hey, did you hear about Spitzer?!!
